The 4-Next Project is a volunteer outreach initiative. Caring and concern through local cooperative action and leadership. Believing that each member of a community has a role and responsibility to engage in the promotion of another's potential, their esteem and greater offering. Gardens are but one such empowering effort.
Our gardening extension efforts began with plots at a local community garden working with special needs students and then building onsite school gardens for the medically fragile and Life Skills classes. We rehabilitated/enhanced the garden facilities at the Arizona State Veterans Home, making them functional and accessible to the residents in wheelchairs. The MANA House Garden is a large growing area for homeless Vets that are receiving transitional services. You, your staff and students may want to share in the gardening experience and add a unique dimension to your school's learning environment. A Get it Started (click here 2.46Mb) garden guide has been created to assist with the development of your own school garden. This low desert planting calendar may help guide your growing schedule/selections. Involve your community. It will be a rewarding and meaningful experience for all.
